Lancaster Audio is proud to present the Official Warehouse Guitar Speaker (WGS) Impulse Responses!

We went all out with the development and creation of these IR’s in collaboration with WGS to insure that we not only faithfully captured the sound of each speaker, but also give you the most amount of options possible.

We started with 5 of the most popular speakers WGS offers that all vary greatly in tone and sound. We also paired each speaker with 5 of the most popular guitar cabs on the market- giving you a total of 25 different combinations and sounds to choose from.

On top of that, we captured each speaker with 6 of the most popular studio microphones in different positions.

THE STUDIO

All work on the IR’s are done at world famous Harmony Studios in West Hollywood. Every single part of the chain was taken into consideration when capturing the sound of each speaker, down to even the cables.

The convertors that we used were the Universal Audio Apollo x16. Mic Pre’s used ranged from Neve to API to the Audient 8024 console in the studio.

Cables were also a careful consideration, we tested out many different cables and ended up going with high end audiophile grade instrument and power cables by Wireworld to insure completely transparency of the cable in the capture process.

The Power amp used is a completely transparent power amp, meaning if you are re-amping with a real guitar amp using a load box, or using your favorite amp sim, our IR’s will be able to react to your gear just like a real guitar cab would.

Everything is recorded and captured at a sample rate of 96,000hz at 24-bit depth to ensure the best possible quality.

Microphone Selection

We used 6 of the best microphones in the world for guitar recording.

•  Shure SM57
•  AKG C414
•  Neumann U87
•  Sennheiser MD421
•  Royer R-10
•  Earthworks SR20LS

Each Microphone was placed in different positions based on what our recording engineers thought sounded record worthy for each speaker/cab combination. The only constant in mic position and placement was the 2 Shure SM57 using the “Fredman” technique. The Fredman technique was captured for all speakers in the bottom right position of each 4×12 cab we used.

Learn more about the Fredman technique here

The tonal balance between all mic’s and positions is diverse. Ranging from the dark sound of the R10, to the brightness of the C414, to the in your face clarity of the SR20LS. We highly encourage you to try blending different mic positions and speakers together to help you get any specific sound you are after. The reason we chose the microphones that we did, in the positions that we did, is so that you have the power to get any sound you personally might want out of each speaker or cab.

In total, you are getting 8 different IR’s per speaker/cab combination. For example, if you buy the “WGS Reaper MesaOS 4×12” the IR’s you will receive are the following:

OSRec_Reaper_57_Fredman
OSRec_Reaper_57_Off
OSRec_Reaper_57_On
OSRec_Reaper_421
OSRec_Reaper_C414
OSRec_Reaper_R10
OSRec_Reaper_SR20LS
OSRec_Reaper_U87

Note: 57_Off and 57_On stand for On and Off axis mic positions.

For your convenience, all of our IR’s come in all popular formats for compatibility with any software or hardware you might happen to use. This includes ready made files for Axe-FX, Line 6 Helix, Kemper Profiling Amp, S-Gear, and more.

The format we recommend you use if working in a DAW environment is what we have in the folder labeled “Wav”, in conjunction with our free IR loader “Pulse.” These IR files are at a sample rate of 96khz 24-bit, ensuring the highest quality possible for your guitar cab simulation. Don’t worry if you only have your DAW sessions running at anything below 96khz sample rate. Our IR loader Pulse uses world class realtime sample rate conversion for high fidelity tone.

The Cabs

We decided to choose 5 of the most popular 4×12 guitar cabinets, as we knew these cabs would make up the majority of what people would actually use themselves in a studio or live situation. They are the following:

• Mesa Boogie Oversized Rectifier 4×12
• Marshall 1960 Vintage 4×12
• Laney LA412 (Supergroup) 4×12
• Engl Pro XXL 4×12
• Orange PPC 4×12

The Speakers

The speakers were chosen by the Lancaster Audio team and WGS to cover a wide range of tonal tastes, with more planned to be added in the future. The current speakers are the following:

• WGS Veteran 30
• WGS Invader 50
• WGS Retro 30
• WGS Reaper
• WGS ReaperHP
